1.  What learning have you inherited through this module and how has it impacted on your own understanding of professional practice? Consider yourself as a student at University as much as an illustrator

·       The importance of having a solid definition of what your practice is as it sets up the foundation for how you shape yourself and define the work around you within that practice.
·       Seeing myself not just as a person but a product in the fact that I’m not just selling my work I’m selling myself (no dirty way) as well. Your level of professionalism towards a fellow practitioner or company is integral in gaining good stead and is as important if not more that the quality of worked produced.
·       I’ve inherited the knowledge that I am not a novice illustrator now but a professional and should treat my work and develop myself in such a way that shows me that.

2. What approaches/ types of research have you found most valuable over this module?
Why did they have such an impact?

·       Pintrest as a way for researching artist forced me to become aware of the art I was looking at and how I categorise it as good/bad and what prominent factors within different works either group them together (such as strong line work) or set them apart.
·       Forcing to promote not only your work but yourself as a product made me rethink the way I view myself and present myself to others as my own self-deprecation effects the how far I, as a practitioner can go within illustration industry.

3. In what way has PPP informed the way your work in other modules and your illustration practice as a whole?

·       It’s helped me gin a back catalogue of artists within my head which helps within the way that I go about different briefs as having that kind of knowledge helps me quickly and efficiently decided what kind of elements within this illustration will be the most important and what artist I know relate to this to help me look at effective ways of getting the content and context across.
·       When learning what illustration was I was able to use this foundation definition as a standard to criticise both mine an others work against. I made me a loot more aware of how something can turn from a drawing to an image to an illustration and how it is important as illustrates that when we answer a brief we make sure we are aware of the fundamental factors that make up or practice.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your PPP submission and how will you address this in the future?

·       Inconsistent blogging, I saw and did a lot more primary research into other artist such as galleries, exhibitions and talks however because I didn’t consistently blog forgot to blog them down and forgot how they were helping shape my practice.
·       I have found it hard to move away from looking at just 2-d drawn character design when I have analysed artist and because in my other modules, especially the last two I’ve seen a shift in my methods and media I feel like the artist I blogged about should have reflected my journey too.

5. What communities of practice and professional contexts do you intend to investigate further as you approach level 5? Why do they appeal to you?

·      Performance- whether through zines, posters or films I’m really getting into the idea of performance within practice and work. Push how we view illustration as well as allow me to create problems for myself that I can only solve through performance, which would open me up to a greater sense of adaptability.
·      Character- I love character design and I always will however looking a character design created in different ways other than drawing but via crafting would be really fun and interesting undertake for me. I am well aware that as a practitioner I am charterer based but pushing the medias and way I create those charterers needs to be further explored. (Look into Pictoplasma)
·      I want to learn more about the theoretical side of illustration. A better and more in-depth understanding about my practice will allow me to be more confident in my work as more exploratory and experimental pieces of work can be easily defended and defined as illustration through but greater understanding of the fundamentals of illustration.

The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions relating to the self-evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.

A copy of your end of module self evaluation should be posted to your studio practice blog. This should be the last post before the submission of work and will provide the starting point for the assessment process. Post a copy of your evaluation to your PPP blog as evidence of your own on going evaluation.

Scott Mccloud - roomba Quote.

I really like research based illustration find I produce my most interesting work

I am stuck in a rut and hate lens

OUIl405 turns out I don't hate lens.

More of fringe illustration in terms of media.
Content within illustration need so buck up according to man.

What I want to have more of in my work

What my strengths are + How to capitalise next year

The future plan

PPP-Top10

Top 10

  • I wanted my top 10 to be based on personal experiences that have affected the way I approach both my practice and my personal life.
  • Contrasting the language used with the illustration allow for simplistic compositional humour
  • I just decided to really push the media used within this piece. Wanting each illustration to force me to think about the media used to create it.

  • With this zine I allowed myself to express some naivety within my artwork, which was very refreshing.
  • Although I have tried to create images that could be easily associated with each thing learnt in the end it had to be personal to me. Because of this I don't mind any confusion it may have for a potential viewer as its directed as my journey on this cause. But if it creates an abstract concept for people to work around that brings further depth to the zine.

Frederique Morrel

Frederiques Morrell's mix of tapestry and sculpture is holds elements of work that intrigue me.
It hold  both contemporary and classic imagery moulded together in classic and modern forms which is all bound together by an ancient practice. It's an overwhelming clash of old and new that can be overwhelming in a visual sense. However it does raise the discussion on how far we can mould different formats together before it starts to unravel itself. The series itself begins to feel overused after a while, it would be nice to see what else Morrell can come up with next.

  • Using Lens, Poetry and performance alongside drawing to illustrate a guide to decorating societies need to be constantly be surrounded by people.
  • It may fall more into film, however I believe that this piece perfectly illustrates how you can take information and transform  it into something visually and emotionally stimulating.
  • I think that illustration has the ability to collaborate with spoken word and film/lens to create such stimulating work.

Kelly Bastow, Andreas Lie, Mikotk

What stood out to me about Kelly Bastows work here was her use of shape and silhouette.
Shape is used as a way of exaggerating and developing figure within these characters.
There are some really good, strong silhouettes within this pieces especially when you contrast the thinner and larger models and have them flow in and out of each other within the frame. I feel like this piece would work in showing the fluidity and flexibility of these femme bodies if Kelly was strictes on keeping the forms within the frame.
Andreas's use of brush to create a fluid and energetic portrait which feels extremely controlled and elegant as away of using media to describe a character the silhouette show control and air of instant ness to it. Using media as away of describing a character is a really smart techniques. Andreas Lie did a series of side portraits using varying media however I believe this one to be the most successful because it's the only one of his pieces I feel which emotes a deeper meaning than media experimentation.
With Mikoto's work I favour this purely for the use of colour to express mood and character. The use of red contrasting entirely with the cooler colour plate sue for the rest of the image placed on the face depicts an air of sinisterness or evil within this character. The almost plact facial expression doesn't allow itself to be read easily by the viewer however by adding the red the view begins to connect the colour symbolism with something bad. Which is an interesting way of using colour to characterise your characters.

1.     What skills have you developed through this brief and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
·       Learning to translate in-depth information into informative imagery- I felt that although my final image was not a direct translation of the essay it came out very well and was heavily informed by the research I did.
·       The importance of language- how language can be used as a tool to enhance and inform illustration and because of the way I think and process things language is a integral tool in my arsenal.
·       Adaptability within ideas and taking others advice- the advice I got from my post-pecha kucha discussion was integral to the way I tackled my diagram. Even though I do find it difficult to take my peers advice on sometimes I’m learning that being more open to advice and more adaptable in my work really pays of in the long run

2.  What approaches to/methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your practical outcomes?
·       Relevance- I love researching subjects I’m interested in and can get lost bogged down in wanting to know anything and everything about a chosen subject. So I learnt on this module to become more focused about what I specifically wanted to know and how the research I chose would help me develop my essay further
·       Multiple- using multiple sources for research, books, articles, cited dissertations, academic articles, films, documentaries are all integral to get a greater understanding of a subject you have to chose varied but appropriate research material which I felt I did really well.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

·       Research and understanding for me have been major strengths as I enjoy learning and translating that into more concise facts and imagery although I don’t know how well I employ that in the end. I do off on rants a lot.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

·       I need to become more concise in presentations
·       My essay writing needs to improve and I hope to utilise student support more when it comes to help reviewing the flow of my work.
·       I felt like I failed in making a direct translation of my essay into a illustration but I feel like that is mainly to do with me biting off more than I can chew with this essay
·       Look to explore and discuss content that can be more thoroughly explained within 3000 words.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

·      I would look a just medieval prostitution in England/ Europe rather than the history of. More precision allows for greater depth in the essay.
·      Be more specific and in-depth about my own definition of patriarchal misogynistic society. It allows the reader and the essay to have a better reference to a more solidified concept rather than leaving my key factor of the essay so open-ended.
·      Look more at the philosophical side of society and how it effects the views of my subject-It’s an important factor missed out from social based essays also may help when coming to illustrating diagram
·      Less waffling in pecha kucha- so I don’t run over next time
·      Go to student support- to help ne in the way I write may essay as it comes across as a constant stream of thought.

Notes

I really like cop especially being able to do my own question and research because I am a massive nerd who likes to learn capitalistically useless things, Especially about social mentality within different societie
